Two SEO Changes Impacting the Remainder of 2022

The SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Industry is beyond unpredictable…

It’s true.

The world of Search Engine Optimization is constantly evolving. Websites that want to maintain their positions on Page One of Google, Bing and Yahoo have to roll with those punches. Meaning? Adjust to the will of those mighty search engines or drop from those high-ranking positions.

What’s going to impact us for the remainder of 2022 in SEO world? Let’s take a look at two of the biggest.

IndexNow
Recent reports suggest that Google will join Bing in using the IndexNow protocol.

IndexNow is an open-source engine used by search engines for discovering new content. Forget traditional crawling. Instead IndexNow uses the ‘push’ method.

So, when a website integrated with IndexNow API updates its content in anyway, the API pushes this information to the search engines.

It was developed in October 2021 by Microsoft, so of course, Bing already support it.

Enabling the IndexNow API can be done in three steps:

  1. Create and download the API key from Bing.
  2. The Downloaded text file needs to be uploaded to the root of your server.
  3. Submit bulk or individual URLs to individual search engines with the following URL parameters:
Google (yet confirmed as of 6/9/2022): https://google.com/indexnow?url=url-changed&key=your-key

Bing: https://www.bing.com/IndexNow?url=url-changed&key=your-key

MUM’s the word…
Google has been putting great efforts into improving the quality of search results. Part of the focus is the use of advanced Artificial Intelligence.

This first happened with the introduction of RankBrain and then later with BERT (2019). Now, Google is introducing Multitask United Model, or MUM.

According to the announcement made by Prabhakar Raghavan during the Google I/O 2021, its new Natural Language Processing Model MUM is 1000 times more powerful than BERT. MUM is capable of multitasking, which enables it to analyze video, images, and text within 75 languages to give users the answers to complex search queries.

This means MUM will combine different aspects of a search query, trying to understand the sentiments, context, entities, and most importantly the user’s intent in providing answers that are really close to what the user expected.

Stay tuned. SEO and Digital Marketing are not static worlds. Many more changes will come.
