Many humans identify themselves through their career. When asked about themselves, their ‘go-to’ response is “I’m a teacher”; or an accountant…actor…plumber…the list goes on. However, that’s not who they are at their core.
Meanwhile, others may identify themselves through familial roles, such as mother…grandfather, etc. Again, that’s not who they are at their core.
Indeed, that may be what you do or be a role that you hold in someone else’s life, but if you define yourself by what you do…or a role that you have…that function/role is easily disrupted. If you identify as being CEO, that job could easily disappear. Then what? You’re nothing? If you identify as ‘mom’, maintaining identification with that role when your child becomes an adult, will easily land you on Dr. Phil in a Meddling Mom segment. It’s not who you are at your core.
Rather, these are transient functions and roles.
A function that you serve is not what you are at your core. At your core, you are much more than a role. To answer the headlined question, you must dig much deeper.
What is the driving force behind you?
Why do you aspire to reach the goals that you aspire to reach?
What drive…what passion…fuels you?
Simply put, that passion that could literally fuel a dozen different career paths.
This is a good exercise for anyone to perform. When I asked myself these questions, I realized that I’m “a relationship builder who cares about helping people; and who works hard to help them get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’.”
That is who I am my core.
That core has certainly helped me in my role with BrandVision Marketing. It’s easy to understand what sparks my ‘giggly inside’ feeling. It’s not the feeling that comes with watching a check enter the bank, although, sure…that’s nice. That is important and necessary. But rather, that special feeling arises upon walking into a client’s business and being greeted by the employees that appreciate the difference that I’m making there. After all, marketing is the lifeblood of a business, whether people want to admit that or not. And when a client entrusts BrandVision with their marketing budget, they are entrusting us with the livelihoods of their businesses…and their employees. So, it’s easy to understand why helping them get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’…and caring about that so deeply, is…and needs to be…such a passionate driving force within my core.
But you know what?
I could take that skill and apply it to any number of other roles and do just as well. Whether it would involve financial planning…insurance…coaching…there are numerous functions in which that core would serve me well.
So, what are you at your core? Not your function. Not your role. Rather, what drives you? What creates that giggly feeling in your stomach that you know is sparked by a passion that transcends a job?
Answer that question and you’re well on your way to incredible success.
